Chapter IV : Second Chance

Land of the Dead, Year undefined

Lost in the Land of the Dead...what a pitiful end for these two men...No obligations, no rights, no bodies...loneliness and boredom at their worst...The two spirit clouds were talking to each other over a third one, immobile.

Spirit2: "It's been a while since he's had any visions."

Spirit1: "What do you think it's about this time?"

Spirit2: "Well, it's the second time in the Land of the Dead...The first time he had a vision here was before the one named Majin Boo appeared in the Land of the Living...It is surely something important!"

Spirit1: "Yeah...but it won't help us to come back alive..."

Spirit2: "Look! He�s coming to!" The third spirit cloud seemed to "wake up", starting to move again.

Spirit1: "Boss?"

Spirit3: "Uhhh...A vision..."

Spirit2: "Sama! Are you feeling all right...Freezer-sama?"

Spirit3(Freezer): "Yes, Zarbon-san. Having a vision is always a painful experience, even in the Land of the Dead."

Spirit2(Zarbon): "And so, Freezer-sama?"

Freezer: "And so?"

Spirit1: "Yeah, Boss! What did you see?"

Freezer: "It was a very strange vision, Dodoria-san...A voice called me...called us... toward a sacred place..."

Zarbon: "Sama?"

Spirit1(Dodoria): "How can we go to a sacred place? We're dead!!!"

Freezer: "We have been summoned, my faithful followers...The sacred place the old man mentionned in my vision...is in the Land of the Dead."

Zarbon: "What?"

Dodoria: "Here?"

Freezer: "Yes...and we are to go there if we want to receive "The Gift"..."

Zarbon: "Which is?"

Freezer: "..."

Freezer: "I am not sure...and I intend to find out! We leave at once!"

Dodoria: "Where are we going?"

Freezer: "Toward White Peak, Dodoria-san...that is what the old man told me..."

Zarbon: "But Freezer-sama! I have never heard of such a place in the Land of the Dead!"

Freezer: "We must go to the Lost Pass. This pass is usually hidden, but it will be visible to us. The old man said that he chooses very carefully to whom he will show the entrance..."

Zarbon: "We will accompany you, Freezer-sama!"

Dodoria: "No problem, Boss! Sure beats playing Janken all day!"

The three spirit clouds flew toward a mountain range in the distance. This mountain range elevated all the way up to the sky and there didn't seem to be any way through. The spirits finally reached their destination.

Freezer: "Yes. The entrance should appear soon..." Dodoria went toward the rock face, touched it and looked up, trying to distinguish the top...and failing.

Freezer: "Look!" Suddenly, the rock face in front of Freezer seemed to slowly vanish, revealing a path to the other side.

Freezer: "There is the path, my followers."

Zarbon: "Er..."

Dodoria: "I don't see anything..."

Zarbon: "Are you feeling okay, Freezer-sama?"

Freezer: "What? You cannot see the opening? Maybe it is because I was the only one contacted...Here, let me show you." Freezer floated toward the rock face...and went right through it!

Dodoria: "Boss!"

Zarbon : "How did he...Maybe he wasn't mad after all! Let's go through from where he disappeared!"

Freezer(from inside the mountain): "I heard that, Zarbon-san! If we weren't dead, I would find your lack of faith disturbing!"

Zarbon(turning toward Dodoria): "!?"

Dodoria: "Yeah, I heard that somewhere before..." The two spirit friends went toward the rock face and tried to push through it...

After their first step, they opened their eyes...only to see rock all around them!!!

Dodoria(moving around): "We can only see rocks...like we're walking right through them!!!"

Zarbon: "Facinating, Jim. A truly unique experience." A voice in front of them came to their ears.

Freezer: "Do you see, now? Let us go."

Zarbon: "Wait! Freezer-sama! We cannot see anything around ourselves! We're walking through the mountain!"

Freezer: "Amazing. I am the only one able to see the pass...how interesting. Follow the sound of my voice, then."

Zarbon and Dodoria followed their leader through the mountain range for a few minutes until their eyes met light. A huge desert stood before them...and in the distance a high mountain peak of a brilliant white color. They had finally made it to the other side.

Zarbon: "Yes, sama! There! This is surely White Peak!"

Dodoria: "Yeah, seems a little too obvious to me..."

Freezer: "That, my loyal subjects, is the goal of this voyage. "The Gift" awaits us there..."

Dodoria: "Let's go!"

Freezer: "But wait! First, we must get through this desert..."

Zarbon: "What is wrong, Freezer-sama?"

Freezer: "I have seen this desert in my vision...It is populated by huge desert creatures called the Sand Dragons. They feast on the Energy of Life...what we call "Soul"...If we are not careful, our existence could end in the belly of one of these creatures..."

Zarbon: "We cannot fly in this spirit form...what will we do, Freezer-sama?"

Freezer(turning toward the other two): "Are you willing to take the risk?"

Dodoria: "We will follow you anywhere and help you, Boss!"

Zarbon: "You could always count on my help."

Freezer: "Perfect, then! Let us cross this desert as quickly as possible and claim this gift!" But suddenly, Freezer lost consiousness...and then woke up with a bad cloud-ache...

Zarbon: "Freezer-sama! Freezer-sama! You have had another vision!"

Freezer: "...Yes, Zarbon-san."

Dodoria: "Was it the old man again? What did he say?"

Freezer: "It was not the old man...it was...a voice...it told me only one thing over and over again..."

Zarbon: "What was it, Freezer-sama?"

Freezer: "It said: "Beware the ides of March!"...I don't really understand the meaning of this..."

Zarbon: "Puzzling..."

Dodoria: "Since when does a month have eyes?" Freezer and Zarbon turned toward him, frowning...

Freezer: "Quiet, Dodoria-san, or I shall have to hurt you...if we ever get back alive..."

Dodoria: "Sure thing, Boss! Narf!"

Zarbon (to himself): "What was that all about???"

They had been crossing the desert for at least three hours and no sign of any beast yet. White Peak was coming closer and closer to them as they went on forward.

Freezer: "I do not know, Dodoria-san. They seem to be non-existant...or at least asleep... "

Zarbon: "Er...Freezer-sama?"

Freezer: "What is it, Zarbon-san?"

Zarbon: "Do not look back and start running!!!!"

Freezer(turning back): "Have you forgotten we are spirits and cannot walk----!"

Freezer froze (literally) as he saw a huge beast with the claws of an ant, two powerful arms with razor-sharp edges and a long snake-like tail trailing behind it... Zarbon, followed by Dodoria, picked up his lord and dashed away as fast as he could... but it was no use, as the beast had no trouble following and catching up to them.

Freezer (fleeing by his own means): "Run away, Dodoria-san! Run!"

As they kept running, another beast appeared in front of them, rising from the sand.

Dodoria: "Bad day to take a walk!!!"

Freezer: "Let's escape through the side." As they turned left, another Dragon emerged.

Dodoria: "We're doomed."

Zarbon: "Maybe if we split up..." More and more terrifying beasts were sprouting from the ground. They were soon surrounded.

Dodoria: "It's the end!"

Freezer: "..."

Freezer: "I will try something." He cleared his throat.

Freezer: "Idolem urudo iatu a wi rot!"

Suddenly, the Sand Dragons stopped moving, as if unsure if they should attack. Freezer's words started echoing throughout the area...The beasts were repeating them...

Dodoria: "Huh?"

Zarbon: "Na...nani?" The Sand Dragons slowly retreated, leaving Freezer and his two henchmen free to march on.

Freezer: "Ho, ho, ho...Works every time..."

Freezer: "...the universal greeting..."

Dodoria (to Zarbon): "The universal greeting?"

Zarbon: "Haven't I heard that somewhere before?..."

Freezer: "Come, my servants! Let us go!"

They finally reached the top. The top of a long staircase which went all the way up the mountain...White Peek...They were in a large room...bookshelves everywhere...scrolls aging in the floor's dust...Torches on the walls and columns lit the room, although they emitted no heat...Freezer looked at his companions and did not believe his eyes...

Zarbon and Dodoria were standing behind him, looking at each other, and at Freezer as well, as they were still spirits, but they now had the shapes...of their former living selves...

Freezer: "It seems we no longer are spirit clouds...It must have something to do with this place..."

????: "There you are! Come! Come!"

The voice came from the back of the room, behind a large bookshelf. Freezer and his allies went toward this voice...

There, they saw an old man, whom Freezer recognized as the one from his vision. He was reading some scrolls, writing as well, but when Freezer turned the corner, he stopped and looked up. He then stood to welcome them.

Freezer: "I have answered your summon only because I wanted to. Now, who are you?"

????: "I am the Sage. I am the guardian of many things...I can do much...but not everything..."

Freezer: "Why did you call me? What was the "Gift" you mentionned?"

Sage: "He, he, he...Calm down, Freezer. I will explain..." Knowing from his vision that the Sage was highly powerful, Freezer tried his all to tolerate this "insult" aimed at him...Everyone would call him "Freezer-sama", not just "Freezer"...He decided to just answer...

Freezer: "Then do so."

Sage: "He, he, he...I am here to watch on the Universe. I have great power, but I am confined here and cannot alter things in other worlds. I would like to ask for your help."

Freezer: "Ho! Ho! Ho!...My help?"

Sage: "Precisely. I can grant upon you a "gift"..."

Freezer: "The Gift?"

Sage: "Yes...This gift is very precious...I only give it to those who are worthy...Long ago, I gave it to someone...my first apprentice...Unfortunately, he is causing some trouble in the lands of living and dead...and that is why I want you to help me..."

Freezer: "..."

Sage: "I would like you to stop my first apprentice. As I said, I can grant upon you a gift to help you...the only thing is, if you accept, you will be giving much...in your own opinion... "

Freezer: "What will I have to give up?"

Sage: "When you receive the gift, you will have to hunt down my first apprentice. It will be an instinctive behaviour, thus you will forget about the fact that you would like to rule the Universe..."

Zarbon and Dodoria: "..."

Freezer(eyes widened): "How do you know so much?"

Sage: "I know many things..."

Freezer: "..."

Freezer: "Are you saying this gift will bring me back to life and give me my body back... but not my memories?"

Sage: "Not exactly...You will retain your memories and recover your life...as well as other things...but remember, your goal will become the defeat of my first apprentice... whether you want it or not... "

Freezer: "Ho! Ho! Ho! I would give up much to come back to life..."

Dodoria: "What about us?"

Zarbon: "Shut up, Dodo!"

Sage: "You are, unfortunately, of no use to me..."

Dodoria: "Kuso..."

Zarbon: "Freezer-sama! Go ahead! You can surely try to conquer the Universe after his first apprentice has been defeated!" Freezer slowly turned toward him, a mean look in his eyes...

Freezer: "Why do you always have to spoil my plans? The Sage has heard you..."

Zarbon: "Uh...Gomen nasai, Freezer-sama!"

Sage: "He, he, he...I ALREADY know of your plans, Freezer...It's just that when you receive the gift, they will considerably change..."

Sage: "So...are you ready to make this commitment? Will you accept? That which you do not know, you will know after you receive the gift..."

Freezer: "..."

Freezer: "Ho, ho, ho...I accept."

Sage: "Then, it is done. I shall now grant upon you the gift, Freezer!"

Freezer smiled to himself, a devious smile...A large light engulphed the room and a violent wind blew as Freezer felt himself change...gain something...special...

Sage: "Now go, my fourth apprentice!"

Freezer felt himself being lifted off the ground, the room around him starting to disappear slowly...

Zarbon: "..."

As the room completely vanished from his sight, the gift he received was complete and suddenly...he understood...
